Supporting International Women in Engineering day 2018

This year, IGEM is proud to sponsor International Women in Engineering day (INWED) on 23 June. The international awareness campaign is designed to raise the profile of women in engineering and draw attention to the range of amazing career opportunities available to girls in this exciting industry. Join us in celebrating the outstanding achievements of women engineers throughout the world.



In the lead up to the day, we've asked women within the gas industry to share what they love about their chosen career:

"As a woman working in the gas industry, I feel a profound sense of fulfilment and with the opportunities for growth and development available, I am looking forward to the future and where it will lead. I am proud to be an engineer!"

"As is the case for so many girls, engineering wasn't a discipline I'd considered when leaving school. My first degree was in geography, my favourite subject at school! I ended up working in the gas industry, mapping pipelines. Soon, I took an interest in engineering and was lucky enough to be given the chance to study Mechanical Engineering through work and college. I now work in the Control Room at Wales & West Utilities (WWU), managing the high pressure network across all of Wales and the South West. It is a very busy and engaging job.

"I also help to promote engineering (especially to girls) by doing talks in schools on the energy industry, having worked for both National Grid and WWU."

"I like working in engineering because it offers a surprisingly wide range of job types and the chance to work in different industries, suiting all personality types. With engineering, you get to mix creativity and logic to solve socially significant problems. I work as a Development Engineer in the gas industry, which delivers three quarters of the UK's total energy demand, so I find it fundamentally rewarding to play my part in keeping the industry safe, secure and ready to facilitate a decarbonised future."

"I work on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from Shell's business, helping to provide lower carbon energy for use across society. As an engineer, I have worked in the environmental and energy fields with people from all around the world, using science and engineering to make a difference.
