IGEM Seminar - “Brief insight into Low pressure Gas mains replacement programme in the UK”

Highlights:
Jointly organised by the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers Far East District Section (IGEM FEEDS) and Towngas Engineering Academy (TEA), the captioned seminar was held on 18 Oct 2016 in North Point Building of the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited. It was well attended with around 40 participants.

Mr. Praveen Kumar Muthusamy, a member of Yorkshire Gas Association and the winner of the Ralph Hackett travelling fellowship, shared his experience on the management and execution of the Low Pressure Gas Mains Replacement Programme in the UK.

The Iron Mains Replacement Programme (IMRP) was introduced in 2002 to address the public safety concern for potential failure of cast iron gas mains and the associated risk of injuries, fatalities and damage to buildings. The decommissioning of all cast iron mains within 30 metres of property was scheduled to be completed in 30 years time. However, the IMRP was restructured in 2013 by Ofgem after the implementation of the Mains Risk Prioritization Score (MRPS) system. Based on the Fracture, Gas ingress and Consequence factors defined in MRPS, mains are now replaced according to their risk categories. The transition to Iron Mains Risk Replacement Programme (IMRRP) has effectively shortened the duration of the project.

During this seminar, participants were able to gain a better understanding of various pipe-laying technologies which include Open Cut, as well as both Dead and Live Insertion techniques. In particular, focus was laid on the cost effectiveness, operational ease and environmental friendliness of the Live Insertion technique. The sharing of such an experience will surely facilitate the progress of Medium Pressure Ductile Iron Replacement Programme in Hong Kong. Past FEDS Chairman, Mr Sam Shum, on behalf of IGEM FEDS, presented souvenir to Mr. Praveen to thank him in delivering such fruitful seminar.
