Gas installations for vehicle repair and body shops
Vehicle repair and body shops have additional potential hazards associated with flammable liquids and vapours from petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG or paint refinishing products. These present particular challenges to those designing, installing, servicing and maintaining gas fired equipment for use on these premises.
IGEM has just published "IGEM/UP/18 - Gas installations for vehicle repair and body shops" which replaces the former British Gas document "IM/28 Gas Appliances in Garage Workshops" which is now almost twenty years old.
The document is intended to ensure that only correctly designed, installed, used, serviced and maintained gas appliances are found in vehicle repair and body shops so that they do not contribute to any incidents involving leaks or spillage of petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG or paint refinishing products.
This Standard describes requirements to ensure that:
- Gas appliances installed in these premises comply with relevant Standards and are installed by competent and qualified persons
- Appliances are installed such that they cannot act as an ignition source for any flammable liquids and vapours that could be present
- Safe methods are used to work on fuel systems including draining fuel tanks
The review of IM/28 by the Panel included consideration of the latest versions of the relevant British Standards and changes or introduction of legislation such as the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations (DSEAR).
