IGEM Young Persons Paper Competition 2021
Background
IGEM is keen to provide young people working in the gas industry an opportunity to enhance their career prospects. Organising on an annual basis, the Young Persons Paper Competition (YPPC) welcomes and rewards entries from young professionals and students who can demonstrate their potential to make a valuable and meaningful contribution to the gas industry.
Eligibility
The competition is open to all gas professionals between the age of 18 and 35 (by 1 June 2021). Participants must be present in the venue for the competition/award presentation. For passport holders, passports must be valid for at least 6 months upon arrival.
Rules and Process
First round screening
‣ Submit an abstract (up to 250 words in English) by 20 Aug 2021 on any topic relevant to the gas industry and where you can demonstrate some involvement. The abstract to contain:
- A concise summary of the main points of the work
- Purpose: what was the problem? What is being solved? Why has the topic been chosen?
- Methods: what work was undertaken? (by the individual), how was the work undertaken?
- Findings: What are the main findings and results from the work? What has been learnt?
- Conclusion: what do the findings mean? What is the significance of the work? What does it mean for the individual/their company/the gas industry?
- Optional: any photo, diagram, table, graph, etc. to accompany the abstract
‣ Topics are encouraged from all business functions and do not have to be engineering based
Far East District Round Final
After the first-round screening, shortlisted candidates in each region will be invited to join the District Section Final in Oct 2021. They will then be expected to write and submit a paper of up to 1,500 words based on the abstract previously submitted. The Section Final includes a 15-minute presentation and 5-minute Q&A, both conducted in English. Details will be further announced.
Grand Final
The champion of District Section Final will represent IGEM Far East District Section to enter the Grand Final at IGEM Headquarters in Dec 2021 (return-trip air tickets, accommodation, and insurance cost will be sponsored). Champion of the National Final will win a memorable trip to the World Gas Conference. FEDS representatives for the UK YPPC Final must be a member of IGEM (have been accepted by 1 Dec 2021).
By entering the competition, an entrant agrees that their presentation may be recorded or filmed and used by IGEM to promote future competitions.
Entry Method
Please fill in the application form and submit the form together with an abstract paper via email to igemfareast@gmail.com on or before 20 Aug 2021 (Fri). Late submission will not be accepted. The abstract must be written in English with no more than 250 words (If necessary, with photos, diagrams, etc., as appropriate). All submissions must be prepared solely by the participants while references must be cited clearly. IGEM Far East District Section shall not be liable for any kind of damage, whether direct or indirect, resulting from the submitted materials.
Assessment Criteria
Grading will be based on the following criteria:
- Benefits to the gas industry development
- Originality and professionalism
- Personal involvement and depth of knowledge
- Quality, enthusiasm and participation
- Ability of problem handling
